As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Meadow Garden welcomes guests for tours of the historic house museum. Visitors at the National Historic Landmark explore George Walton’s role in American independence. Orphaned at a young age, Walton rose to play an important role in the founding of our country. His story helps us remember that people of every every walk of life contributed to the American story.
Guided tours of the historic house include the period rooms where the Waltons lived more than 230 years ago. Guests also visit the Signers Room to learn more about the Declaration of Independence and explore exhibits celebrating the inspiring women in the history of Meadow Garden and the 125 years of preservation. Expanded interpretation in the Cellar Kitchen and Weaving Room features hands-on displays to help us better understand the story of the enslaved at Meadow Garden who did difficult work without pay to maintain the household. A wall of names honors the profound contributions of the enslaved who have woven such a rich tapestry in our nation’s history and culture.
