Sapelo Island

Sapelo Island activities are centered around nature and history. Access to the island is restricted to preserve the island’s natural and cultural resources. Tours here let you explore the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Gullah-Geechee community of Hog Hammock, R.J. Reynolds Mansion, and the Sapelo Island Lighthouse. Take a boat nearby for legendary fishing and diving spots in the Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.

Sapelo Island is the fourth largest in the chain of islands along Georgia’s coast that stretch along the Atlantic Ocean from Savannah to Kingsland. The barrier island is accessible only by ferry from Meridian or private boat. Once on the island, visitors typically get around by biking, walking, or guided tours, as there are no public roads for private vehicles. If you access the island by private boat, you are only allowed up to the tide line unless you have a host or are on a tour.

Accommodations on Sapelo Island are limited, so most visitors stay on the mainland in Darien. Options for staying overnight on the island include the Cabretta Campground and cabins available through guided tours, but they book up fast. Dining options are minimal, so it’s a good idea to bring snacks or picnic supplies for your visit.

Many visitors find spring and fall to be the best seasons to visit Sapelo Island. The temperatures are comfortable, and you can enjoy activities without the summer heat. The weather in winter is still considered mild compared to northern destinations.

The most convenient major airports are Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV), Brunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK), and Jacksonville International Airport (JAX). From all, you’ll drive to Darien and take the ferry to the island.
