When was the last time you read a cookbook—that was hard to put down? Baking in the American South is far more than a compilation of recipes. It is a vivid history lesson, like a recipe’s connection to the Civil Rights Movement, or how Zephyr White’s pecan pie might have influenced President Johnson’s passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Georgia Writers Museum is excited to announce that world-renowned food critic and author, Anne Byrn, will be the Meet the Author presenter on Tuesday, November 4th, at the museum at 10:30am (doors open at 10:00am). Because this event includes a gourmet brunch, attendees will get a chance to experience mouthwatering Southern baking at its finest. Tickets are $40 ($35 each for two or more).

From humble home kitchens to innovative new Southern chefs, Byrn’s essential Baking in the American South contains 200 recipes from 14 states, and more than 150 photos. This stunning cookbook will help you bake like a Southerner, even if you aren’t. Her stories and recipes have been collected and perfected over years, and are now accessible to us all. Anne’s expertise in assessing, modernizing, and developing well-written recipes makes her book the definitive guide for bakers of all levels.

Anne Byrn is a New York Times bestselling food writer and author. Her latest book, Baking in the American South, was a finalist for the 2025 Tennessee Book Award, and was named one of 12 Essential Cookbooks for 2025 by the American Library Association. It follows her books, Skillet Love, American Cookie, and American Cake, which NPR named one of the best cookbooks of 2016. Byrn’s previous titles include The Cake Mix Doctor, deemed one of Southern Living’s top 100 cookbooks of all time. A cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia, she began her career as a food writer for The Atlanta Journal. She has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, The Food Network, and QVC.
