Len Foote Hike Inn Celebrates 20 Years of Wilderness Education
Chattahoochee National Forest, GA – Len Foote Hike Inn is celebrating its 20-year
anniversary this month. A gathering of current and retired Georgia State Park employees as well
as volunteers, board members and staff came together recently to celebrate the success of the
facility and look ahead to its future.
“After two decades, the Hike Inn has lived up to our initial vision of protecting Georgia’s natural
resources through education and recreation,” said Len Foote Hike Inn Board President Jeff
Woody. “We aim to make ourselves more sustainable and to educate even more young people in
the years ahead. And, of course, our guests will continue to enjoy the unparalleled service they
have enjoyed all these years.”
Len Foote Hike Inn is a backcountry lodge owned by the Georgia State Parks and operated by
the nonprofit Len Foote Hike Inn Inc. More than 9,000 guests per year hike five miles from
Amicalola Falls State Park over a wilderness trail to enjoy dinner, a comfortable room and
breakfast the next morning. Along the way, as they walk through an old-growth oak and hickory
forest, the hikers learn about the natural history along the trail.
“When guests arrive at the Hike Inn, they learn about our LEED-certified facility which is a
showcase of sustainability,” said Eric Graves, Len Foote Hike Inn Executive Director. “We have
composting toilets, solar-heated showers, vermiculture (red wiggler worms) to eat our food and
office waste and rain barrels to conserve water. We receive about 70 percent of our electricity
from solar photovoltaics. Our guests learn practical ways to save energy, conserve water and
reduce pollution in daily living.”
