Make Art or Dig Artifacts: Ossabaw Island Day Trips feature Creativity (June 2) or Archaeology (June 23)

Friday May 18, 2018

What: Ossabaw Island Foundation offers two day trips to Ossabaw Island in June 2018

Creative Day Trip. Saturday, June 2, 9:30am - 4pm. Fee: $85 Bring your own materials to paint, sketch, write or shoot photos on Ossabaw Island's beach and North End. Spend the day on your own making art, or participate in an optional camera phone/instagram photo workshop led by photographer Stephen Morton.

An Ossabaw Island visit includes excellent art-making inspiration: possible sightings of a variety of wildlife including migratory birds, wading birds, and feral hogs, as well as free-roaming domesticated donkeys, and perhaps an alligator. Take short hikes to Cane Patch Island (site of a large native American shell midden), and on forest and marshside trails.

Boat transportation to Ossabaw Island provided by Captain Mike Neal, Bull River Cruises.

Hands-On Archaeology Experience. Saturday, June 23, 9am-3:30pm. Fee: $95

Take part in an active archaeological dig on Ossabaw Island on the Georgia coast.

Led by the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources' Archaeology Division and the University of Georgia, this excavation at South End Plantation site on Ossabaw Island is serving as a Field School for UGA’s archaeology graduate and undergraduate students. Assist archaeologists excavating public and domestic architecture associated with a Late Mississippian-era Native American village. Participants will likely encounter historic period artifacts from the site being farmed in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Techniques include excavation, remote sensing using ground penetrating radar, and labwork including rinsing, sorting and identifying artifacts.

Boat transportation to Ossabaw Island provided by Captain Joel Formby, Walks on Wassaw charter boat company.
