Millen-Jenkins County Scenic Byway

The Jenkins County Scenic Byway forms a thirty mile loop that begins along Cotton Avenue in Millen's Historic District, travels north along State Route 23, passes west along a network of county roadways and leads back into Millen on State Route 17. Located on the route are the historic sites, forests, pastures, and farms that reflect the character and nature of Jenkins County. The Byway route has had little commercial activity to disturb its scenic qualities. The narrow roadways travel through tunnels of trees along some stretches and through wide-open farmland along others. Also of interest along the route are numerous historic buildings beginning with Millen's National Register Listed Historic District. Most of these buildings were constructed between 1880 and 1930. One of the most elegant structures is the Jenkins County Courthouse built in 1910. The Byway also passes through some of Jenkins County's many small historic communities. Some other significent historic buildings are Carswell Grove Baptist Church, Big Buckhead Baptist Church (the third oldest Baptist church in Georgia), and Fair Haven Methodist Church (1846).
