Porterdale is located 35 miles east of Atlanta between Conyers and Covington. Just one square mile, with a population of approximately 1,800, it enjoys the reputation as one of the best preserved mill villages in the state; three mills, five iconic water tanks, an operational hydroplant, 500+ original mill homes (all listed on the National Register of Historic Places), an old two-room jail, a historic train depot, several parks, the  seven-mile Yellow River Water trail listed on Georgia River Network for kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, and canoing. With all the residential streets named after trees, Porterdale is a nature lovers paradise with an abundance of historic landmarks throughout the village.

In 2006, one of the three mills was converted to loft units called the Porterdale Mill Lofts. Sitting along the Yellow River, the Porterdale Mill Lofts are an adaptive new use of the Textile Mill and Cotton Warehouse facilities built over a century ago in Porterdale Ga.
