Established in 1788, Historic Oak Grove Cemetery hosts visitors from around the world. Many come to trace their heritage, explore history, or simply find a peaceful escape beneath the timeless live oaks that line its paths. Among the graves are 29 soldiers of the American Revolutionary War. The stories of St. Marys’ past—the triumphs and tragedies—are etched in the stones, commemorating lives touched by yellow fever and the resilience of French Acadians who sought refuge here after their exile from Nova Scotia. Statesmen and craftsmen, plantation owners and enslaved individuals, captains, seamen, and fishermen—all rest here, painting a portrait of a time when neighbors were friends, and life moved with the tide. The earliest marked grave is from 1801.
