The highly-anticipated Bold Monk Brewing Co. opens on Atlanta's upper westside
Atlanta’s First Brewery, Restaurant, Bookstore, and Beer Garden is a Destination Unto Its Own
Bold Monk Brewing Co. has opened on Atlanta’s vibrant Upper Westside. Featuring a world-class brewery, restaurant, bookstore, and later this spring, a beer garden nestled in the woods, Bold Monk is more than just a brewery. It’s a cultural, communal, experience where people can meet, drink, eat, read, work, and connect.
The opening of Bold Monk Brewing Co. represents a 10-year labor of love for Cindy and Alan LeBlanc, John “JR” Roberts, and their Brewed to Serve Restaurant Group, Inc., the Atlanta-based restaurant company behind Max Lager’s Wood-Fired Grill & Brewery, White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails, and Richards’ Southern Fried.
“We created Bold Monk to be an inclusive, engaging place, welcoming everyone to enjoy a shared spirit of joy,” said Alan LeBlanc, president and CCO of Brewed to Serve Restaurant Group. “The music, artisan space, coffee, beer, wine, cocktails, and Belgian-inspired food set the foundation, but it’s really the people who are the soul of Bold Monk. With Matthew Williams, our ‘Experience Architect’, at the helm, Bold Monk is a place where people can slow down and enjoy love, laughter, and community in an age of increased isolation.”
Designed by ASD|SKY with aesthetics by Smith Hanes Studio, the Bold Monk incorporates the work of local artisans, including the steelwork of David Adams, the carpentry and woodwork of Windsor Pine, plasterwork by Southeast Plaster, and lighting by Skylar Morgan.
The restaurant unfolds gracefully into alternative dining and entertainment spaces. The towering paneled oak entry doors that greet guests open into the Salon, a sun-filled gallery space featuring an inviting bar and antique alabaster café tables.
Just steps below is the intimate Beer Cellar dining room with comfortable booths, intricate stonework, and a reclaimed beamed ceiling. Passing through its glass arched doors, you enter the Cask Room that offers views of the brewery and four custom-crafted, 15-barrel, American oak foeders.
Bold Monk’s third level is the dramatic 5,000-square-foot barrel-vaulted Abbey. This third-space features plush couches and low tables reminiscent of European parlors, as well as a book store with books on philosophy, poetry, history, and literature selected by the Bold Monk community. The intricate Mondrian-influenced glasswork framing the Abbey provides a bird’s eye view of the brewery and brewing process taking place below.
The Bold Monk reflects the cooperative nature of the Belgian Monastic breweries that carries on today with Atlanta’s collaborative brewing community. With 23 years of experience in the Atlanta brewing industry, Managing Partner and Brewmaster John “JR” Roberts is one of the fathers of craft brewing in Atlanta and recognized as a progressive brewer internationally.
JR and head brewer Neal Englemen, the award-winning former Brewmaster at Wrecking Bar Brew Pub, have created a beer list that reflects the evolution of contemporary American craft beer while keeping a mindful eye towards the rich history of European breweries.
Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Bold Monk’s menu features Belgian-inspired favorites, such as Bitterballen, Brabant, Moules, and of course, Steak & Frites and Liège Wafels. Other dishes include specialty sandwiches, salads, grain bowls, and Neapolitan brick oven pizzas.
In keeping with the social nature of the restaurant, Brewed to Serve partnered with Methodical Coffee of Greenville, S.C. to create a private blend for the Bold Monk coffee program that will encompass a full menu of offerings including nitro-brew.
The Bold Monk is the flagship destination at COMPLEX West Midtown, located at the corner of Chattahoochee Boulevard and Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard. Developed by Third & Urban, the space is setting a new standard for adaptive, sustainable re-use in West Midtown.
“We took a thoughtful approach to select a restaurant that would suit COMPLEX’s style and alternative workspaces and would make a positive impact in the popular West Midtown neighborhood,” explained Hank Farmer, a managing partner at Third & Urban. “Bold Monk offers a truly unique experience filled with art, culture and history and we’re proud to be part of it.”
Bold Monk is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. during the week, and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for brunch and dinner.
