Washington is one of Georgia’s oldest and most beautiful towns, established in 1780 and the first in the nation to be named in honor of George Washington. Today, its downtown historic district features over 70 well-preserved commercial buildings and antebellum, Victorian and colonial homes along its narrow, tree-lined streets. While paying homage to its centuries-old legacy, including several sites on the National Register of Historic Places, downtown Washington is also a perfect example of the growing Main Street movement, with dozens of unique and thriving shops, boutiques, galleries, cafes and bed and breakfast inns. You can spend the day touring its historic landmarks, shopping for gifts or antiques, or simply strolling the beautiful streets or relaxing in its authentic, 230+ year old town square.
