Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters
Location: Savannah
The Owens-Thomas House, one of the most visited and important historic homes in Savannah, has reinterpreted the history of the home in a more thoughtful and holistic way. Significant conservation and preservation efforts have been made to the home, and the tour narrative will now speak about the complex relationship between all the people who lived in the home – the owners and the enslaved people – in the early 1800s. Visitors will leave with a broader understanding of how slavery impacted urban life both in and beyond the home, and how it affected young and old, black and white, enslaved and free. Many people, when they think of slavery in the South, think about plantations and not urban settings, which in many ways was even more complicated because they all lived within the small footprint of the home, rather than spread out over the large acreage of a plantation.
