Looking for a way to celebrate Independence Day that goes beyond the usual backyard barbecue? Explore history at Meadow Garden, the home of George Walton, one of Georgia’s very own signers of the Declaration of Independence. In honor of America250, Meadow Garden is throwing open its gates FREE to the public for a celebration that brings the spirit of 1776 to life. From cannon salutes to hands-on children's activities, this free community event offers patriotism, history, and fun. The celebration kicks off with a reading of the Declaration of Independence by George Walton, followed by a cannon salute and a resounding HUZZAH!

Highlighted Activities:

· A Special Gift: At 11:30 a.m., Meadow Garden will host a special dedication ceremony for a Southern Magnolia tree—a historic gift of George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

· History & Live Music: Visit the revolutionary soldiers’ camp displays right on the grounds while enjoying the Garden City Strummers and the Sweet Adelines performing during the day.

· Interactive Family Fun: Young patriots can try their hand at 18th-century quill pen writing and other historical activities. Visitors of all ages are invited to share their own American piece of history and visions for the future on the interactive Story Wall.

Explore History:

During the event, guests are invited to take a journey through the historic home where the Waltons lived more than 235 years ago. Follow George Walton’s incredible path from an orphan and carpenter's apprentice to a successful lawyer and, at just 26 years old, one of the youngest signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The tour highlights inspiring women—including George Walton's wife Dorothy and the enslaved woman Cloe, who were captured at sea by the British; his granddaughter, travel-writer Octavia Walton LeVert; and the Georgia DAR members who saved the property 125 years ago.

Guests can also tour the Cellar Kitchen and Weaving Room, which feature hands-on displays honoring the enslaved individuals whose vital, difficult work maintained the household.

Bonus “Behind-the-Scenes” Look: Meadow Garden is currently undergoing a major multi-year preservation and restoration project. The museum remains fully open during this time, giving guests a rare, fascinating peek inside the historic walls to see preservation in progress!
