Classic Football Movies Filmed in Georgia
Cooler temperatures and fall weather mean that football season is upon us. No matter what team you're cheering for, or not cheering for, we can all agree on watching these Georgia-filmed football movies. Give them a watch before game day!
Remember the Titans (2000)
Two high school football coaches must come together to bring their racially integrated team to victory. Denzel Washington stars alongside then-unknown stars like Kate Bosworth, Hayden Panettiere, Donald Faison and Ryan Gosling. Filming took place in Atlanta, Covington, Decatur and Rome, in particular on the campus of Berry College. A number of local high schools also were used.
The Blind Side (2009)
The Oscar-winning film is based on the life of Michael Oher, a homeless man who was taken in by a Memphis family. He went on to become an NFL player. The movie starred Sandra Bullock, Kathy Bates and Tim McGraw. Agnes Scott College in Decatur, The Shed at Glenwood, and Grant Park were all used as filming locations.
We Are Marshall (2006)
After a tragic plane crash takes the lives of Marshall University's players and coaches, the community tries to rebuild and return to the field. Based on a true story, Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Fox and January Jones star. Some filming took place on location in West Virginia while other scenes used the Atlanta University Center.
The Longest Yard (1974)
A former professional football player-turned-convict organizes a team of inmates to play against a team of prison guards. The warden tells him that if he throws the game, he will earn an early release. The Oscar-nominated film stars Burt Reynolds in one of the first projects to use the state. Filming took place at the active Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, through the cooperation of then-governor Jimmy Carter, along with Brunswick and Savannah.
