We are here to help evacuees find travel information and resources during Hurricane Milton.

Below, we have provided guidance on areas in Georgia that are open to evacuees, lodging availability, visitor services, and other emergency resources.

Where to Go 

Due to the widespread damage across many Georgia counties from Hurricane Helene’s impact, we welcome you to find refuge in areas such as Albany, Columbus, Macon, Savannah, Atlanta, Cartersville, Ellijay, and Dahlonega. Resources in South Georgia are limited, so please call ahead.

Hotels & Private Rentals

If you are concerned about existing reservations, please contact your lodging provider directly. 

Campsites & Cabins 

Georgia State Parks are open for RVs and campers, including pets, and some equestrian facilities are available. Before you go, please check GaStateParks.org/Alerts for closures, updates, and availability.

Visitor Information Centers

All nine state Visitor Information Centers are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and are available to assist with identifying accommodations and travel information. Restrooms are open 24/7 at the Valdosta, St. Marys, and Port Wentworth (Savannah) centers, which are situated on or near evacuation routes. Locations and contact information can be found here.

Our hearts are with all those in Georgia and the Southeast who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene. As we continue working together as a state to help our affected communities get back on their feet, we recognize the vital role tourism can play in recovering and rebuilding from this storm.

While parts of Georgia are still without power and recovering from damages caused by Hurricane Helene, much of the state is open for business and ready to be enjoyed.

Shelters and Feeding Locations

The American Red Cross has opened shelters in several hurricane-stricken areas. To view the listing, click here.

Georgia businesses and organizations can find resources on the Georgia Department of Economic Development website, which offers tools and information to help navigate recovery.

How to Help

For individuals wishing to volunteer to help in Hurricane Helene’s recovery efforts, fill out this application form. If an organization needs your service, they will contact you.

Donation locations through UGA Extension

Each University of Georgia (UGA) Cooperative Extension District has established a drop-off location(s) for supplies requested for those in various affected areas. Please note deadlines and see below for more specific details.

Southeast District

Drop-off Locations:

  • Emanuel County Extension Office: In-person drops only (call Jakyn Tyson at 229-276-5456 for details)
  • Laurens County Extension Office: In-person and UPS drops (665 Home Run Drive, Dublin)
  • Toombs County Extension Office: In-person and UPS drops (360 Bulldog Road, Lyons)
  • Coffee County Extension Office: In-person and UPS drops (709 East Ward Street, Douglas) 

Drop-off Deadline: Wednesday, October 9, at 4 p.m. 

Guidelines:

  • Please drop off items from 2-4 p.m.
  • Please call ahead, if possible.
  • Please be prepared to unload the items that you deliver.
  • Items may also be sent via UPS from supplies such as Amazon. 

Items Requested:

  • Bottled water, cereal/snack bars, feminine supplies, non-perishable foods, canned foods with pop tabs, paper plates, napkins, toilet paper, diapers and basic toiletry items, wet wipes, and heavy-duty trash bags.
  • Activities for kids will also be accepted: Crayons, coloring books, crafts, etc.

Southwest District

Drop-off Location: Cook County Extension Office at 206 East 9th Street, Adel

Drop-off Deadline: Tuesday, October 8, at 4 p.m. 

Guidelines:

  • Please drop off items from 1-4 p.m.
  • Please call ahead if possible: 229-896-7456.
  • Please be prepared to unload the items that you deliver. 

Items Requested

  • Bottled water, cereal/snack bars, non-perishable foods, canned foods with pop tabs, paper plates, napkins, toilet paper, wet wipes, and heavy-duty trash bags. 

County-specific items requested:

  • Brooks County: Laundry detergent and personal hygiene items
  • Ben Hill County: Tarps
  • Lowndes County: Batteries, flashlights, any kind of fan, coolers, pet food, gas cans (do not have to be new).
  • Berrien, Clinch, Cook, and Lanier: All of the above

Northwest District

Drop-off Locations:

  • Bartow County Extension Office at 320 West Cherokee Avenue, Cartersville 
    • Drop-Off Deadline: Wednesday, October 9, at 4 p.m.
    • Please drop off items from 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.
    • If you could call ahead, that would be appreciated: 770-387-5142.
    • Please be prepared to unload the items that you deliver.
    • Items Requested:
      • Bottled water, cereal/snack bars, non-perishable foods, canned foods with pop tabs, paper plates, napkins, toilet paper, wet wipes, and heavy-duty trash bags.
  • UGA Griffin Campus: The Center for Urban Agriculture, Building 4417 (290 Higgins Road, Griffin)
    • Directions: The Center for Urban Agriculture Building is located on the same side of Higgins as the Mule Barn. Please enter through the white door marked with a sign. Place items on and under tables to your left and/or middle cubby/room on the left.
    • Drop-Off Deadline: Wednesday, October 9, at 4 p.m.
    • Guidelines:
      • If you could call ahead, that would be appreciated: 770-228-7274.
      • Please be prepared to unload the items that you deliver. 
    • Items Requested:
      • Bottled water, cereal/snack bars, non-perishable foods, canned foods with pop tabs, paper plates, napkins, toilet paper, wet wipes, and heavy-duty trash bags.

Northeast District

Drop-off Location: Jackson County Extension Office at 255 Curtis H Spence Drive, Jefferson 

Drop-off Deadline: Friday, October 4 at 4 p.m. 

Items Requested:

  • Bottled water, cereal/ snack bars, pop tarts, non-perishable foods, canned foods with pop tabs, paper plates, napkins, toilet paper, wet wipes, and heavy-duty trash bags.
