Leucine Zipper & the Zinc Fingers Explore the Science of Pop-Punk

One of the odder and more entertaining albums you’re likely to hear was released in October by Atlanta band Leucine Zipper & the Zinc Fingers.

The conceptual group hits you with a preposterous premise right off the bat – they’re a genetically modified band created by scientists in a lab. But even if you balk at swallowing that dose of silly hokum, there’s no denying that the songs on their debut CD Atomic Anarchy are fun, funny, sharply executed and pack a wallop of jumpy pop-punk.

Taking their concept to a logical level, all of the songs on the CD are about science in some way, including reworked versions of The Ramones’ “I Want You Around” and Meat Puppets’ “Lake of Fire.” Fitting sprints through Alice Cooper’s “Clones” and The Adolescents’ “Amoeba” top things off. Not the least bit knowledgeable about science? Don’t worry – the CD booklet acts as an equally entertaining textbook to help explain the songs! Check out the band at leucinezipper.com.
