The Plains Visitors Center, operated by Georgia Department of Natural Resources, is located along US Highway 280, one mile east of the town of Plains, Ga., home of former President Jimmy Carter. The Visitors Center sits on 17 acres, including a 2.5-acre pond. The grounds include several picnic tables as well as covered picnic areas with grills.

Planted on the grounds are plants and shrubs including the Georgia State tree (live oak) and the Georgia State flower (Cherokee rose). There are two butterfly gardens honoring Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, which are featured on the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail.

The building has two large porches with rocking chairs where visitors can rest before continuing their trip. Inside the building is a room dedicated to the life and presidency of President Carter. There is a selection of brochures and pictures promoting the State Parks as well as attractions and historic sites across the state of Georgia.

The center is open Tuesday - Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for information services.
