7 Georgia Playgrounds Worth the Drive

Bring a picnic lunch, bubbles, a Frisbee and Fido for the perfect affordable weekend activity. The playground "just down the road" is always a sure bet, but for those who want to explore, we’ve got six Atlanta-area playgrounds that are definitely worth the drive.

1. Fort Yargo State Park, Winder

Located in Winder between Atlanta and Athens, Fort Yargo State Park boasts a wide array of family-friendly activities waiting to be enjoyed. Take in the wooded serenity of a classic playground — then try something new with the park's disc golf course. There's even a large swimming beach to cool off after a fun day.

2. DeKalb-Peachtree Airport Park, Atlanta

This playground isn’t the largest, and it isn’t decked with the most sophisticated equipment, but it has something no other playground in Georgia can offer – an incredible view of planes taking off and landing at Peachtree-DeKalb airport in Dekalb County. Don’t forget to grab lunch at Downwind or 57th Fighter Group.

3. Dunwoody Nature Center, Dunwoody

The playground at this FREE nature center has been recently upgraded, and it is amazing. First, it’s in the shade. YAY. Second, there are huge structures for kids to climb, unique swings, a teeter-totter, rotating tower, and more. If the kids need a break, you can also check out the boardwalk, treehouse and other activities for the family.

4. Mason Mill Park, Decatur

This Decatur playground is HUGE, with ramps that lead to a pirate ship structure and a three-story treehouse. My kiddo loves the fast slides! There is also a toddler playground with separate swings. The playground is fenced, and there is a restroom facility between the big-kid park and the toddler area. Wow!! In addition to the playground you’ll find a community garden, five tennis courts, dog park and walking trails. Plus, the library is right there, too. You could make an entire day of it!

Noguchi Playground at Piedmont Park in Atlanta

5. Noguchi Playground, Atlanta

Piedmont Park is a fun escape for the entire family, with so much to do year-round. There are two playgrounds – Mayor’s Grove and Noguchi. Mayor’s Grove is a Boundless Playground - a company that specializes in creating playgrounds for children with and without disabilities to play together. Noguchi is a renowned artist and sculptor and this was his only playground creation, excelling in creative shapes, colors and textures. Don’t go just for the playground, there is so many more family-fun opportunities here for FREE.

6. Playable Art at Abernathy Greenway Park North, Sandy Springs

There are six art installations, all for kids to play on and crawl over at the Playable Art Park. One is a swing set; the rest are primarily for climbing, sliding and having fun. Don’t skip this park that Atlanta Magazine named Best of 2014.

7. Webb Bridge Park, Alpharetta

The playground at Webb Bridge Park is made of wood, with bridges, towers, slides, monkey bars and more. There is an artificial creek running through it that kids can wade in and a covered sand box. In fact, the entire playground is very shady – it’s one of our favorites. While you are visiting Alpharetta, check out these other fantastic things to do.
