The Peabody Awards, the highest award given in broadcast media, is administered by the University of Georgia. Since 1940, the Peabody Award has steadily grown from being the "Pulitzer Prize for Radio" to recognizing excellence in a wide range of electronic media. The Peabody Galleries feature fascinating, interactive displays commemorating and celebrating the best of broadcasting over the past seven decades. Visitors can see memorabilia from their favorite recent television shows as well as past winners. A real gem for Georgia heritage buffs are the newsfilm archives and "city films" dating back to the 1940s. There are radio transcription discs, audiotape, audiocassettes, 16mm kinescopes and prints, 2" video reels, videocassettes, websites, and objects associated with the collection. Reference, or "user" copies, are available for much of the collection for use in the University of Georgia Libraries Media Department or at the Special Collections Library, located at 300 S. Hull St., Athens Ga. The Peabody Awards Collection includes more than 40,000 entries.
