William Holmes Borders leading up to the civil rights movement, the church acquired land for development of Wheat Street Gardens for low-income housing and Wheat Street Towers, a high-rise building for seniors, which are managed by the Wheat Street Charitable Foundation and provide affordable housing in the Sweet Auburn Historic District. Wheat Street also established one of the first federal credit unions in the South.

Visitors are invited to attend worship services on Sunday mornings.
