Lake Blackshear for Family Fun

Looking for a relaxing escape on a breathtaking 1,800-acre lake? Then head to Lake Blackshear Resort & Golf Club in Southwest Georgia. It sits inside Georgia Veterans State Park & Resort, but it’s a world away from the chaos of everyday life.

If you’re visiting on the weekend, we recommend the Family Affair package, which includes breakfast for the family, and two choices from activities like taking out the pontoon boat or jet skis.

My kids loved the comfy rooms overlooking the lake (with great views of the sunset!) and the outdoor swimming pool. In addition, there’s a disc golf course, free bicycle rental, and the indoor/outdoor veterans’ museum complete with a Boeing B-29A and Huey helicopter.

One of our favorite things about staying at this park is that you can ride the Historic SAM Shortline Railroad very easily, as its primary depot is in Cordele – right within the park. The SAM Shortline is Georgia’s only rolling state park. In addition to enjoying the rich history of the train cars and the path through Southwest Georgia, you experience the history of Crisp and Sumter counties, with people and events that have impacted Georgia and the nation.
