Recreation abounds around 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona. Bring your own boat or rent houseboats, pontoons and ski boats at one of four area marinas in Cartersville. Choose from more than 600 lakeside campsites, accommodating RVs and tent campers. Enjoy pristine hiking trails and picnic areas. The Corps of Engineers Visitor Center at the top of the dam portrays regional history and natural resources. Open daily year-round.
The museum tells the story of the origins of the Corps of Engineers beginning with the creation of the position of Chief Engineer during Revolutionary War. At the end of the Revolution the position was abolished, but was reestablished shortly after the signing of the Constitution. The Center features video exhibits and displays about the area's history, ranging from the time of early Indians - to the gold mining and iron making days - to the present.
The Visitor's Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; except on holidays. Admission is free.
