Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Folkston

Folkston, in southeast Georgia near the Florida border and Jacksonville, is the perfect place to unwind. From nearby coastal areas to shopping in the historical downtown to the relaxing Southern hospitality of a bed & breakfasts to an eco-tour highlighting the history, culture and ecology of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

On boat tours of the Okefenokee, which are typically led by guides who grew up in the area, you may learn about alligator biology, see forests of bay and cypress trees, and spot ibis, egrets, herons, sandhill cranes, otters and maybe even a bear or bobcat. Other tours include sunset, canoe, kayak or motorboat excursions, overnight wilderness treks and custom tours. Every season and water level offers different opportunities to see new sides of the swamp.

Railroad enthusiasts love the frequent trains that pass through town. The Folkston Funnel — also known as the CSXT funnel — is a double track carrying trains to and from Florida. From the viewing platform, train watchers may see up to 60 trains pass in a day. There's a picnic area and other amenities nearby to ensure you're comfortable between train whistles.
