When the structure was first built in 1917, it was used as a firehouse complete with a bell to signal fires. The jail was added in 1921 and the building served as the town's city hall, courthouse and jail. Original graffiti of the prisoners remains in the iron cells.

In the last several years the Wilkinson County Historical Society has done a significant renovation of building capturing a true glimpse into history. Currently, tours are available through dedicated volunteers at scheduled times.
