The Haven Zoo, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization founded by anthropologist JohnieSue Thurman. The animal rescue is located in Lavonia, Georgia, on 23 acres near Lake Hartwell. The zoo is dedicated to providing a permanent, loving home to a variety of exotic and domestic displaced animals. They receive life-long care with a diverse diet, a comfortable habitat, and enrichment activities.
The zoo offers an interactive environment created to inspire and educate the public about exotic animals and conservation issues worldwide. We are committed to rescuing animals categorized as threatened, endangered or critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. And we also take in animals rescued from unfit homes (facilitated by Georgia DNR and the US Fish and Wildlife) and animals previously used in laboratory research.
This is one of the few facilities in Georgia that cares for rhesus macaque monkeys, coyotes, foxes, and an African serval. We also provide loving care for lemurs, horses, goats, llamas, donkey, pigs, chickens, and peacocks. Cats from the local shelter also have a place and a job at the zoo, and two great pyrenees rescues guard the perimeter.
