Jekyll Island celebrates independence with family-friendly fun
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. -- June 19 -- Jekyll Island will host a full day of family-friendly events to celebrate Independence Day. Events begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, with an old-fashioned parade and finish that evening with a spectaluar, oceanfront fireworks show.
“July 4th is always exciting on Jekyll Island,” said Meggan Hood, senior director of marketing. “We have a full day of activities planned throughout the island, and there’s no better place to celebrate the holiday. Whether you’re an area resident or visiting for the holiday, Jekyll Island is the coast’s best Independence Day celebration.”
Planned events include:
· Third Annual Jekyll Island Independence Day Parade (Tuesday, July 4, 9 a.m.): Celebrate America’s birthday with an old-fashioned patriotic parade through the Historic District. Locals, residents and island guests are invited to decorate their bikes, golf carts, strollers, pets, and themselves and join in the fun. Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the parade. Details, including judging categories, can be found on the Jekyll Island website.
· Red, White, & Bounce (Tuesday, July 4, noon to 6 p.m.): Bring the whole family to the Beach Village where inflateables will fill the Village Green. Enjoy live music and sidewalk sales throughout the day while the kids bouce and play on the Green.
· Oceanfront Fireworks (Tuesday, July 4, approximately 9 p.m.): Witness the most spectacular fireworks in the Golden Isles. Arrive early to claim your spot on the miles of wide beach on Jekyll. Fireworks are best viewed from between the Holiday Inn Resort and south to the Days Inn on the island’s oceanfront side. The display will begin at approximately 9 p.m. when the sky offers the best background for this incredible pyrotechnic display.
· Beach Village Sidewalk Sale (Saturday, July 1, 9 a.m. through Tuesday, July 4, 9 p.m.): From sundresses to sunglasses, Jekyll Island’s Beach Village merchants have your summer necessities covered during this Village-wide sidewalk sale.
Admission for all Independence Day activities is free. However, an increased gate fee will be in effect for this date. This fee is an additional $4 per daily/weekly pass. For more information, visit the Jekyll Island Facebook events page or website.
