Tattnall Square Park is one of the oldest urban parks in the country, and the second oldest in the state of Georgia. When Macon was founded in 1823, the layout of the new city included numerous parks and open green spaces that were used for recreation, farmers markets, and fire barriers, even near the new downtown business district. As the city grew and Mercer University was established nearby, Tattnall Square Park became more important as a community asset, prompting the formation of the Tattnall Square Improvement District in 1914. Located on a city block across from Mercer University, this park offers picnic space, a children's playground, nearby dog park, tennis courts, soccer field and plenty of room to enjoy a nice day in Macon. The park is also a popular spot for free public movie screenings, festivals, and special events. Tattnall Square Park is the home of Mercer University's annual Bearstock music festival and Mulberry Farmers Market.
