New Mobile Tour App of Savannah’s Bonaventure Cemetery Now Available to City Visitors and Armchair Tourists

Savannah GA – To overcome the challenge created by a limited number of trained volunteer tour guides and the increasing number of tourists wanting a guided tour of Savanah’s famous Bonaventure Cemetery by the Bonaventure Historical Society, the Society has produced a travel app that replicates the tour guide route.

The app, available for iOS and Android devices, costs $4.99 and takes visitors on a 31-stop tour of the earliest and most famous gravesites of the cemetery. The net proceeds from the sale of each app, $3.50, are used to fund the Society’s preservation and restoration activities at the Bonaventure Cemetery.

The accompanying narration also provides a history of the property, beginning with its days as a plantation, the development of the original cemetery up to its current popularity.  It takes an estimated hour to complete the tour, plus possible stoppage time for photographs or additional study of sites.  A free sampler app containing only 4 stops is also available from the app stores.

Each stop on the tour is narrated by a different BHS volunteer member.  The opening and closing narrations are by Sonny Dixon, a popular newscaster in Savannah for over 20 years.

More than 80,000 visitors to Bonaventure are expected to sign in at the Society’s visitors center in 2017 to acquire maps or brochures, an increase of 15% over the previous year.  Many more go directly into the cemetery and another several thousand visitors use one of the commercial tour guide services that include Bonaventure in their programs.  It’s estimated that nearly one percent of the 1.3 million visitors to The Hostess City go the three miles east of downtown Savannah to visit Bonaventure, rated #1 among the free tourist attractions in the city on social media.  Bonaventure Cemetery has also been rated the second most beautiful cemetery in the U. S. (and sixth most beautiful in the world) by CNNTravel.com and has received similar accolades from Travel+Leisure.com and other travel media.
