Colonel Benjamin Hawkins served throughout the Revolutionary War as a member of General Washington's staff. After the war, he was sent to Georgia to assume jurisdiction over all Indian Tribes South of the Ohio River. He established the Creek Indian Agency on the banks of the Flint River in Crawford County where he made his permanent home. He also built Fort Hawkins on Ocmulgee River, Macon, Georgia. He died at his home in Crawford County and was buried near the Flint River. His grave is marked by a stone monument.
