The mission of the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium is to develop the public's understanding and appreciation of the numerous coastal marine environments in the state of Georgia, and to foster respect for the beauty and complexity of these environments. The University of Georgia's public saltwater aquarium features more than 100 marine animals from coastal Georgia.
The Education Center is located on Skidaway Island, near Savannah. A magnificent, state of the art teaching aquarium and the Educational Building can be found this facility. There are educational exhibits, lecture rooms, four teaching laboratories and two research laboratories. A dormitory and dining room are also operated in support of the marine education program.
The R/V Sea Dawg, a 43 ft converted lobster boat, is docked just outside of the facility and is available to make small cruises for educational purposes. A boardwalk over the salt marsh to the river supports the education program. This boardwalk is part of the ADA approved nature trail.
