McDuffie Museum

The McDuffie Museum is a free museum dedicated to sharing the history of Thomson and McDuffie County. The museum's mission is to instill in the residents of McDuffie County, and especially its youth, an understanding of their community and a sense of pride in their history. The McDuffie Museum's programs, exhibits, and activities advance and promote public knowledge and appreciation of McDuffie County's history and the importance of a local history museum in general.

In January 2009, McDuffie Museum opened its doors on Thomson's Main Street with "Key Ingredients: America by Food," an exhibit that came from the Museums on Main Street division of the Smithsonian Institute. Since then, McDuffie Museum has hosted several other exciting exhibits, the most important telling the story about McDuffie County's history, including its first inhabitants -- Native American tribes -- its lost Quaker colony of Wrightsboro, and its residents that played major roles in the nation's history.

In January of 2026, the new executive director of the McDuffie Museum completely reorganized the museum's collection to ensure a more cohesive and curated experience for visitors. In addition to that, the museum now hosts monthly events to attract new and returning visitors and provide a hands-on means of learning history. The museum staff is especially proud to offer its services to the students and seniors of McDuffie County and the surrounding areas.
